PAUL URKIJO UPCOMING FILM GAUA AT SITGES FILM FEST
This morning, GAUA (Night, the new project by PAUL URKIJO ALIJO, was presented at the Sitges Festival, following the successes of Errementari and Irati. As in his previous works, his third feature film will navigate between the codes of fantasy and historical reality, but this time delving into the nocturnal world of Basque mythology, set in the 17th century.
GAUA combines the unsettling mythological world of nocturnal beings with the imagery of rural superstition in a way never before seen in Spanish / Basque cinema, creating a universe full of mystery, emotion, and epic.
Paul Urkijo explains the origin of the project as follows: “Since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated by the stories related to the night that exist in the mythology of our country. These were tales used to teach the young to respect the dangers of darkness, as well as legends about spirits, demons, and witches that emerged from the persecutions of the 17th century and today have evolved into figures of female empowerment. It’s a subject that has always interested me, and with GAUA , I intend to bring it to the big screen in a spectacular, eerie, and epic way. More terrifying, yet beautiful, scenes from the nocturnal legends of our oral tradition.”

SYNOPSIS
Basque Mountains, 17th century. In the midst of a witch hunt, Kattalin leaves the farmhouse in the middle of the night, fleeing from her husband. Lost in the darkness of the forest, she senses a presence chasing her. Along the way, she encounters three friendly women who, while doing laundry, share scary stories and village gossip. To Kattalin’s amazement, she will soon find herself becoming part of these tales.
