REVIEW: SUPERNOVA (1993)

By Elena Anele (*)

SUPERNOVA is a movie from 1993 directed by Juan Miñón (La leyenda de Balthasar el Castrado, La blanca paloma) and written by him, Javier Miñon, Juan Francia and Jesús Beltrán.

The film is full of 90s stars as Marta Sánchez – a famous singer-, Javier Gurruchaga – popular TV showman and musician-, Gabino Diego, Neus Assensi and more. For this it was thought to become the blockbuster of the decade in Spain, but far from that, it was a complete failure.

I am not sure of the synopsis as it was a total mess, but it seems they had in mind to make the definite Metropolis remake. We are dealing with a kind of mad doctor (Javier Gurruchaga)- owner of a Flan factory (??)- who clones a sexy singer. His intentions are not to raise suspicious when he kidnaps the real one in order to have kids with her. He has been in love with Fénix, the intergalactic singer, for years and now he is in power of a tool that will make his dreams come true. There is another guy, a comic author, in love with her, who seeking for the truth will save her from this evil.

It is not funny; it has no sense and even though it had a good promoting campaign few went to the theater to watch it. And now I know why. Bad acting – Marta Sánchez won the yoga award for worst acting that year-, low budget science fiction, senseless sexual jokes,
